Our classes teach children Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and self defense fundamentals, bully prevention, stranger danger awareness, and character development – all in a fun, safe, and encouraging environment. We accept children as young as 4 years old into our Pee Wee program (ages 4-6). At this age, we focus on basic motor skills, listening to instructions, following directions, and having fun. Our classes are structured to match the attention spans and physical abilities of young children. For ages 5-12, we offer our Kids Jiu-Jitsu program which teaches fundamental positions, escapes, submissions, bully prevention, and stranger danger awareness. We also offer Youth Wrestling (ages 7-12) for kids who want to develop takedowns and explosive athleticism. If your child can follow simple instructions and separate from you for 30-45 minutes, they are ready. Many parents are surprised at how quickly even shy or hyperactive children fall in love with Jiu-Jitsu. Your child’s first class is always free – no obligation, just fun.
Absolutely not. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu actually teaches the opposite – control, humility, and restraint. Children learn that the mats are for training, not fighting. They are taught to tap out when caught, to release submissions immediately, and to treat training partners with respect. Many parents enroll their children specifically because they are too aggressive or have trouble controlling their emotions. Jiu-Jitsu gives them a healthy outlet for their energy while teaching self-discipline. Our bully prevention curriculum is one of the most important parts of our kids program. We teach children three levels of defense. First, verbal assertiveness – using a strong voice to say “Stop” or “Back up” while standing tall. Second, boundary setting and walking away when possible. Third, when physical defense is necessary, we teach safe, effective techniques to escape grabs, break wrist holds, and get help from an adult. We emphasize that Jiu-Jitsu is for self-defense only – never for showing off or starting fights. Children learn that the best way to win a fight is to avoid it altogether.
