I have been practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for approximately six months and was visiting the Huntington Beach area from out of town for business. I wanted to find a gym where I could continue training and get some rolling in while I was away, so I contacted several academies in the area. Coach Nam was the only person who responded, and he got back to me very quickly. From our first interaction, he was incredibly warm and welcoming, inviting me to come in, train with the team, and try a class on the house.
When I arrived, I was immediately impressed by how friendly and welcoming everyone was. The adult class included a broad range of ages and experience levels, from teenagers and young adults to more experienced practitioners. As someone who is still new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I especially appreciated the supportive and ego-free environment. Nobody tried to intimidate me or prove anything at my expense. Everyone I trained and rolled with was patient, respectful, and genuinely interested in helping me have a positive experience.
The facility itself was also exceptionally clean and well maintained. The mats were spotless, and the entire training area felt fresh, organized, and carefully cared for. Cleanliness is especially important in a contact sport like Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and it was clear that the instructors take the health, safety, and comfort of their students seriously. The clean environment made the academy feel even more welcoming and allowed me to train comfortably and confidently.
The class itself was well organized, enjoyable, and appropriately challenging. There were approximately 20 to 30 students present, but there were also several black belts, coaches, and other higher-ranking practitioners available to help. Because of this, the class never felt overcrowded, and students still received plenty of individual instruction and attention.
One experience that especially stood out occurred during the rolling portion of the class. Everyone had already paired off, and I was briefly left without a partner. One of the black belts immediately stepped in and offered to work with me. Although he was obviously far more experienced and skilled, he never used the round as an opportunity to overwhelm me or demonstrate how much better he was. Instead, he allowed me to experiment, try different techniques, and see where my current abilities were.
Afterward, he took several minutes to sit down with me and discuss my training. I asked what I was doing well, where I was struggling, and what I should focus on improving. His feedback was thoughtful, encouraging, and constructive. He was incredibly positive about where I was in my journey and made me feel supported rather than judged. That interaction reflected the overall culture of the academy: highly skilled practitioners who are confident enough to remain humble and who genuinely want to help newer students develop.
I also appreciated how strongly the gym emphasized safety and mutual respect. When I became tired and needed to take a break, everyone was completely understanding and supportive. The younger students were enthusiastic, positive, and respectful, which speaks very highly of the culture Coach Nam and the other instructors have created.
I do not live in the area and was not sure what to expect when visiting an unfamiliar gym, but this turned out to be an outstanding experience. Coach Nam and everyone I met made me feel like part of the team from the moment I walked through the door. If I lived in the Huntington Beach area, this would absolutely be the academy I would choose. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for excellent instruction, a clean and safe training environment, skilled and humble practitioners, and a genuinely warm and welcoming Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu community.
